Okay, I’m going to clarify something. I live in Keene. What happened at pumpkin fest was disgusting and our entire city is appalled by how the college students acted. I just saw a mast post about how the Keene riot was racist because and that it was given white privilege. I understand that white…
Lemme preface this by saying that I hope you weren’t affected by all that bullshit and that you and yours are safe.
I wish I knew what post you’re talking about.
I keep seeing posts like yours where people are like ‘ugh these are not the same thing’, ‘these are two completely different events in two different situations’, ‘how is racism even come in to play’ and I’m just like-
I don’t understand how but it seems like you’re missing the point. The point isn’t what happened, how you did it, or even what you did. This is the general ‘you’ referring to all those drunken kids. The point is how the everyone else reacted to what you did.
It was played up as some giant joke, as frat boys getting out of hand, as students who got a little ‘too’ drunk and ‘a little’ too wild. If I have this information right, there were even 50+ arrests made and a bunch of people hurt.
Y’all destroyed a town yet the media is doing the equivalent of a facepalm and shrug. Y’all destroyed a town left broken glass in the streets. Y’all destroyed a town and SWAT wasn’t called in until after a car was rolled over and set on fire.
Y’all destroyed a town (over pumpkins, for God’s sake) and no one ended up dead.
That’s white privilege in action.
Ferguson and the Pumpkin Riots are not even remotely the same (I wouldn’t dare disrespect the #Ferguson movement like that). The point is that white kids are free to riot over pumpkins and have the world call them ‘drunken revelers’ while kids of color are free to riot over basic rights like freedom & justice and be called “thugs and animals”.
